Luxury Cash : Heath Killen : Dollar ReDe$ign

‘My $100 and $1 rebrand concept takes elements of the existing designs and works them into something entirely new and unique. My aim was to preserve the integrity of the design and value of the notes, while bringing them into the 21st century with something that possesses both classic and modern elements and is unencumbered by any unnecessary decorative details.

The rationale behind my design is threefold.

1. American’s are in debt. The world is in debt. There's no one simple solution, however something that is rarely considered is the way that we think about and treat money itself. So often money is referred to as "cash" and it's crumpled up into wallets, passed indiscriminately from grubby hand to grubby hand, and it's rarely given the reverence that it deserves. How often do we receive a bank note and think "I earned this" ? We work hard for our money, so why do we so often waste it on junk? Perhaps if a note was designed more like a luxury item itself, we'd be less inclined to part with it and waste it on trivialities and things we simply don't need.

Most high end stores have beautifully designed gift-vouchers, which gives the item an air of exclusivity and specialness. They're usually given on special occasions, and they instantly turn the recipient into a more discerning shopper. Perhaps if notes were designed more like these they would encourage us to save, and to think twice about how, why and where we invest it.

2. Security. This is obviously one of the most important considerations in designing a note. I have four (hypothetical) security features at work here. The first is a set of specially designed metallic inks printed on the polymer surface. These green and gold formulas would be instantly recognizable and extremely difficult to copy. The green recognizes the previous note design, as the American currency is still widely known as the "greenback". The gold represents value and wealth. It has gravitas and contributes to the "luxury" feel of the rebranding. In order to stay a step ahead of potential counterfeiters, the formula could be modified slightly between editions.

Working in conjunction with the inks are holographic images of birds in flight. Each side of the notes feature a slightly different hologram, and the absence of this holographic feature would reveal a counterfeit immediately.

And finally the type in the top left and bottom right hand corners would be a bespoke dot-matrix font, which would be printed with raised ink. This security device would also allow for Braille elements for the vision impaired. This is all printed above two transparent seals, which are taken from the previous iterations of the note. These innovative security measures allow for a more minimal design, replacing the need for complex illustrations and guilloche.

3. The message. Firstly, a message to the world. The dove itself an internationally recognized symbol of peace, and placing it on the $100 note would be a bold statement from a country that has come under a great deal of international condemnation for its part in wars around the world. Ultimately it is a highly visible message about hope and the desire to co-exist peacefully both at home and abroad.

Secondly, a message to the nation. The $1 - the more widely circulated of the two features a bald eagle, a traditional American symbol of strength and pride. It's presented here in a way that is both elegant and powerful.’

My Two Cents : Justin Pattelli : Dollar ReDe$ign 2010

“In the spirit of a more universal Buck, I wanted to really make each individual bill stand out from the others. This was done by creating large and colorful denomination marks on the front and back of each note. This is one of the few ways I was able to separate one currency note from another, all the while keeping the set of bills aesthetically pleasing and enjoyable to interact with. Each bill will be fitted with a brail-like system (using a series of bumps to allow users who may have vision impairments to interact with the bills) and each bill features larger type (most notably the denomination value on the front); two ways to improve the experience of the bill with vision impaired users.”

Dollar ReDe$ign Competition : 2010 : Win an Apple iPad

IT'S A SMACK DOWN!

We are pleased to announce the launch of our 2nd Annual Dollar ReDe$ign Competition (2010) as part of our ongoing Dollar rebranding initiative. And we are now offering you a chance to win an Apple iPad as our top prize.

Just a year ago we threw down the challenge for the first time and asked you to submit your ideas for rebranding the battered US Dollar. Despite the many really great ideas and numerous submissions we received, nothing has changed.

It’s Up to You

So here’s the deal. It’s been over 100 years since the American Dollar was conceived and ‘designed.’ And since its inception the bills have gone through minor modifications. But the Treasury’s continual patchwork of quick-fix solutions has left us with a piece of paper resembling - at best - a sow's ear.

You CAN Make a Difference

More significantly, our reputation has been tarnished, so we have to take matters into our own hands. Yes, artists of the world, it’s time we unite, it’s time to take up your arms and show your support for this very important cause. It’s one that will unite us all, one that is a means to an end for each and every one of us, and one that can only be by the People, for the People. Period.

WAIT! THERE’S MORE ...

Bigger is Better: At the end of the day, we’d really like to show the world all the ideas you come up with in a really big way. So this year we'd like to stage an exhibition, publish a book of everyone’s submissions, award an additional special prize, and in general just make some seriously major noise ...

Money, Money, Money: But we need money to do that. So if you’re interested in making a donation of as little as $1 towards helping us stage such an event, then follow this link to learn more.

HOW TO ENTER

Brief: Simply redesign the US Dollar bill in any way you think appropriate and submit to us via email at info@dollarredesign.com for review.

Guidelines: Keep in mind this a branding project so that means we are looking for ideas that define or redefine what America stands for. And we want to see how you would best represent that, visually, through the redesign of the US currency.

But really we’re just looking for really great ideas. So don’t get bogged down in hypothetical technicalities, or trying to truly answer the ‘brief’ because ultimately a great idea is a great idea and anything is possible, if we want to make it happen.

PRIZES

1st Prize: 1x 16gb Apple iPad -OR- $500 Cash (you choose) + a Dollar ReDe$ign t-shirt.

2nd + 3rd Place Runners Up: $100 Cash each + a Dollar ReDe$ign t-shirt.

All submissions will be posted online.

Where to Submit: email your ideas to info@dollarredesign.com

Closing date for submissions: July 4th, 2010

Please note that we have the right to veto any work submitted. And all proposals are submitted at the author's own risk.

The Opposition Strikes Back : Treasury Dept : Dollar ReDe$ign – Not!

In response to our recent call for entries, the Treasury Department just sent in some quick fix solutions. Utilizing a rogue's gallery of dead Presidents and Masonic iconography, their ideas are vintage in every respect. Clearly this is a joke but unfortunately the Bureau for Printing and Engraving was unavailable for comment at press time. And where's the $1 bill? Curious ...

Dollar ReDe$ign Competition: 2010

IT'S A SMACK DOWN!

We are pleased to announce the launch of our 2nd Annual Dollar ReDe$ign Competition (2010) as part of our ongoing Dollar rebranding initiative and in response to the pathetic failure of the bureaucrats in Washington to think for one second outside of their box.

Just a year ago we threw down the challenge for the first time and asked you to submit your ideas for rebranding the battered US Dollar. But despite the many really great ideas and numerous submissions we received, nothing has changed.

Limply, in response to our plea, the President said ‘health-care’ was his main priority when we wrote to him in May, 2009. So now that’s ‘in the bag’ (LOL), we think the time is ripe to turn our attention again to the what is probably the most important issue we face today ... rebranding the mighty US Dollar and saving our failed global economy.

It’s Up to You

So here’s the deal. It’s been over 100 years since the American Dollar was conceived and ‘designed.’ And since its inception the bills have gone through minor modifications, mostly satisfying the Fed’s paranoid security concerns. But the Treasury’s continual patchwork of quick-fix solutions has left us with a piece of paper resembling - at best - a sow's ear.

More significantly, our reputation has also been tarnished. Every major power has rattled their sabers in defiant dissatisfaction at America’s hard nosed arrogance over fiscal policy and continuing bank failures – consequently the great American dream has been tarnished and needs to be revived.

You CAN Make a Difference

We have to take matters into our own hands as it’s clear the government and most certainly the banks are not there to help us – why would they when they're too busy helping themselves!

Yes, artists of the world, it’s time we unite, it’s time to take up your arms and declare your dissatisfaction and show your support for this very important cause.

Sure that’s the beauty of the internet – build a site and they will come (in theory), but we’d like to go more street level this time and stage an exhibition too, publish a book of everyone’s submissions, award an additional special prize and in general just make some seriously major noise ...

Money, Money, Money: But we need money to do that. And resources too. So if you’re interested in making a donation of as little as $1 towards helping us stage such an event, then follow this link to learn more. Think of of it like giving back to the community, sharing the love, helping yourself get back what’s yours – we promise, if you give, you shall receive.

Keep in mind that first and foremost this a branding project so that means we are looking for ideas that define or redefine what America stands for. And we want to see how you would best represent that, visually, through the redesign of the US currency.

We are also looking for ideas on ways to improve counterfeiting concerns, long term, as well as ways to differentiate the various denominations for the visually impaired – either through the use of varying colors, differentiating sizes, use of textures, braille and so on.

Guidelines: For instance your ideas could be based around themes such as national icons, heroes, symbols, monuments, landscape, architecture, people, the meaning of money, political issues, the constitution for instance, the future of money even – be that physical, virtual or digital.

But really we’re just looking for really great ideas. So don’t get bogged down in hypothetical technicalities, or trying to truly answer the ‘brief’ because ultimately a great idea is a great idea and anything is possible if we want to make it happen.
